Distinguishing Types of Self-Care
Broadly speaking, there are three categories of self-care for entrepreneurs: workload relief, health and wellness, and treats. We’ll dive into each in more detail throughout the rest of the article, but it’s important to go into self-care with the foundational mindset that all three categories matter.
If you’re only giving yourself fun treats but neglecting your overall wellbeing, you’ll wind up feeling gross over time. If you’re giving it all at work but never making room for fun and relaxation, you’ll burn out. Focus on spreading your self-care efforts across all three categories for the best results.
Simplify Your Workload
Although you absolutely should do all you can to establish a work-life balance, the fact of the matter is, as an entrepreneur, work plays a massive role in your life. Pretending otherwise won’t do you any favors, so instead, simply acknowledge that the work you put in (or delegate) during the day will make your life easier off the clock, as well.
That’s why finding trustworthy employees and outsourcing to useful services is so useful, especially when you’re just starting off. For example, you can toil through getting an LLC set up, or you can look into a service that will do it for you. If you tend toward wanting control over every aspect of your company, practice letting go and trusting others. Not only is it a valuable skill to have, but it will empower you to maintain stamina and keep your business going in the long run.
Take Care of Your Mind and Body
Brushing your teeth and having a healthy lunch might not be the most glamorous forms of self-care, but they’re often the most effective. After all, you live inside your body — when it runs at its best, so do you. Unfortunately, stress leads many of us to neglect these core forms of self-care.
This can wear at entrepreneurs and, over time, leave you in a pretty dreadful state of health. Even setting aside the health risks, however, it will still make you less happy, less productive, and more likely to burn out. Here are some very simple health and wellness rules to live by to avoid this:
Stick with these simple rules, and you’ll be able to keep your body in great shape.
Finally, you should make room in your schedule for special treats. There’s no right or wrong thing here — it could be picking up a favorite dessert, getting a facial, or having a quiet night in with a warm bath. Just pick something that brings you joy and makes the moment special.
This isn’t just a matter of having a nice moment, however — the act of accumulating positive experiences actually has significant psychological power. Our brains come to expect what we give them on a regular basis. If all you give your brain is work and chores, you’ll start to wake up dreading your day. Sprinkle in a trip to the park or listening to a favorite album, however, and your brain learns to expect good things. This will make your mood better and empower you to seek more positive experiences going forward.
Taking good care of yourself isn’t easy when you’re running a business, but it’s worth it. We hope this article inspires you to find effective ways to incorporate more self-care into your regular routine. Make it a habit, and you’ll be more energized, more productive, and, most importantly, happier.
